About

For years, Kevin and Doug have been entertaining audiences with their witty humor and absurd music. They longed to bring their irreverent behaviour to the masses, and when a commercial radio program never materialized, they decided to make their content available on the internet through podcasting.

Strange Brood, an insightful audio program, began as a spinoff of the Unemployment Line podcast where Doug was a founder and moderator. In June 2005, Kevin approached Doug to solicit his help in setting up a podcast studio and website. Doug replied, “I would be severely disappointed if I was not a part of your show.” Thus, the dynamic duo realized their dream of producing an entertaining audio program.

Production commenced with a rapid succession of events:

The main hook of the show, the “Ill-Advised Trombone Duet”, was born on June 18, 2005 when the two attended a performance by Neil Diamond impersonator Denny Diamond. The trombone duets have been the number-one attraction for musician-listeners of the Brood. Arrangements are arranged by either Doug or Kevin, and recent episodes have featured trombone-tenor saxophone duets as well.

Dr. Phil McGrawAnother popular segment began as a series of rants made by Kevin, loosely titled “Stuck in my Craw” or “Craw Stuffers”. It was later that Kevin obtained a soundbyte spoken my Dr. Phil McGraw on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in which Dr. Phil uttered the now infamous phrase “…and this really does just chap my ass.” Dr. Phil’s Ass Chappers became a weekly vehicle for humorous rants, eventually getting it’s own theme music in Episode 015 on August 25.

Due to vacation conflicts and increasing demands at his new job, Doug was sporadically unable to record episodes in the fall of 2005. A third personality, Mike, was added to the Brood lineup on Episode 012, recorded August 15, 2006. Because of his humor and musical expertise, Mike was a seamless addition to the show, first as permanent guest host and later as a fully priveleged moderator. Since Mike is a woodwind player, his appearance on the Brood led to the first of many trombone-tenor sax duets on Episode 013, posted August 17, 2005.

Doug remained a presence on the show through call-ins and occasional in-studio appearances. The first time all three hosts appeared together in person was Episode 049 on December 22, much to the delight of listeners. This undefeatable combination of Kevin, Doug, and Mike became affectionately known as the “Three Man Weave”.

The Strange Brood continues to entertain a worldwide audience with twice-weekly episodes, and the show remains on the innovative forefront of the entertainment industry by offering video and other creative content in addition to it’s world-class audio programming.
